How To Get BGCI Certified?

Eligibility Criteria

The following categories of individuals are eligible for applying to become certified Genetic Counselors under BGC :

  1. Individuals who have completed an accredited genetic counseling course from India, or equivalent, from any other country.
  2. Individuals who have completed a formal training or educational course in genetic counselling of at least one year duration.
  3. Individuals who have completed a 12+4 years of courses in life sciences like medicine, psychology, sociology, nursing and allied fields with relevant clinical counselling experience.
  4. Individuals with Masters or PhD degree in human genetics with relevant clinical counseling experience.
  5. Individuals currently working or have worked in a genetics or genomics lab providing result related counseling to patients for more than 3 years
  6. Special categories of Senior members, who can support BGC in guiding, planning courses, training, CMEs, workshops etc.
    1. Grandfathers >20years of experience in Human Genetic/Genomic counseling, pioneers in the field, nominated by BGC India members, seconded by executive council and subject to approval of the advisory board.
    2. Associate members->10years of experience in genetic teaching/testing associated with university, industry, hospitals/clinics or private research laboratory/institutes.

CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION

Interested candidates can apply to the board as per following instructions

  1. Interested candidates are requested to submit duly filled application form along with supporting documents on or before 30-04-2026 specifying under which category they wish to be considered.
  2. The Written examination is scheduled to be held via online mode on 21st June 2026
  3. The examination will consist of MCQs with main focus on Genetics and its application to Genetic Counseling. It will be followed by an interview.
