The Board of Genetic Counseling and Skill India alliance
National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a unique Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, working with the government of India that acts as a catalyst, supporting and coordinating efforts to enhance and strengthen skill development initiatives. Healthcare Sector Skill Council (HSSC) is an autonomous body established under the NSDC to focus on specific industry sectors, developing standards and qualifications for those sectors. It works with an objective to create a robust and vibrant eco-system for quality vocational education and skill development in Allied Healthcare space in the country and recognised Genetic Counseling as a profession in India in 2024. As part of this initiative, HSSC assessed Level 2 BGC certified Genetic counselors with the National Skills Qualification Framework Level: 6.5, Qualification pack for Genetic counselors with QP Code: HSS/Q8705 through two rounds of written examinations followed by two rounds of interviews to give them certified Genetic Counselor trainer recognition. This is a formal process to show GCs on their portal and establish our presence. This milestone marks a significant step toward standardizing and advancing genetic counseling as a specialized healthcare service in India. This recognition not only validates the expertise of BGCI-certified GCs but also marks a significant milestone step toward standardizing and advancing the genetic counseling profession in India. It aligns with BGCI mission to ensure high-quality genetic counseling services, enhance professional standards, and expand career opportunities in genomics and personalized medicine.
